Today is the 8th Annual Sidney Chism Community Picnic. For many years, candidates for local elected office descended on St. Peter's Picnic in Midtown each year to gladhand, kiss babies, and campaign. The St. Peter's Picnic is no more and Sidney Chism's annual picnic has essentially taken its place. While the host is a Democrat on the Shelby County Commission, the event attracts Republicans and Democrats alike. The picnic includes voter registration, free food and plenty of activities for kids. It's a rare opportunity to speak with many elected officials at one place and time.
