Well, it finally happened. I wondered how long it would take. ABC's Nashville had its first gay kiss tonight, kind of. Gunnar's friend Will tried to steal one in an awkward scene. We'll see what the show does with it. It was a little disappointing because it could play into the whole sad, hackneyed "gays are predatory and opportunistic" theme. But there is something gutsy about it, too. Again, we'll see how gutsy if the storyline develops.

At least it tells the rest country what they might not expect given all the national exposure our Legislature has received for anti-equality legislation: There are boys who kiss boys in Tennessee and girls who kiss girls and the world hasn't come to an end yet.
What a shocking scene! I can't wait to sew what they do with it!!! I live close to Nashville and yes there are way more boys kissing boys and girls kissing girls than one might think, especially in Nashville...
ReplyDeleteI wasn't shocked at all. I knew it was going to happen. It was just a matter of when. I could tell Will was crushing on Gunnar from the start.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was gutsy too! A gay kiss on tv is no big deal these days, but the way this was handled was original. This story line is very realistic and reflects what it's like to be a closeted gay secretly in love with your straight friend. There's one of three ways this will go:
ReplyDelete1) Will's love will go unrequited and he leave the show heartbroken.
2) The writers may go down the "gay predatory" track and Will will be villainized (I don't think ABC will do this to the gay community).
3) Gunnar is obviously going through a period of self-discovery and perhaps he may discover he has feelings for Will.
I think it would be awesome if they made Gunnar bisexual. Now that's something we haven't seen on tv yet.
